About the Campaign
Both of Sheba’s feet were run over by a car, and one has been severely ripped open.
Sheba is an eight year old mix, probably of a Shepherd and a Husky. Her owner Art got her from a homeless friend about two years ago. She was going to Arizona and asked Art to watch Sheba. She never returned.
Art has been homeless most of his life, but has been in subsidized housing for the last few years through a government program in Hemet, CA. He is in his 60’s, and receives government assistance such as food stamps. Sheba was injured on May 29th, and Art has been cleaning and caring for the wound, but the idea of visiting a vet, at any price is not something he considers accessible.
Update — July 7, 2026
After nearly 3 weeks of bandage changes, medications and x-rays, the doctor has determined that Sheba’s wound will not heal. Specifically, a protruding and deformed bone is the problem. Though we hoped to avoid it, amputation is now the best option. We will get her to a great vet in Santa Monica for both a second opinion, and the amputation if he agrees. In total this will cost about $2,000 more, and we have secured a $1,000 donation, so another $1,000 is needed.
Over the weekend Art came to a food pantry event in Riverside, to get free food, and brought Sheba. At this pantry he met one of the hosts of the event, Alycia. She saw Sheba’s condition, took the photos and video of Sheba, and looked for help for her to get to a vet, and found us.
Alycia also took Art to a local feed store to get some basic medications for Sheba. The pills were $2.75 each, and Art had exactly $12 to his name, a ten dollar bill and two ones carefully folded in his pocket. He asked to buy as many as he could for the $12, but Alycia stepped in and bought 12 pills for Sheba, which is a 24 day supply.
Obviously Sheba needs to see a vet. Our hope is that it is only a tissue injury, but she may have broken bones in her foot. She needs stitches and/or professional bandaging and x-rays. Sheba lived with various homeless people, and so was homeless herself, until ending up with Art, so she has never been to a vet. Being eight, we are sure the vet will want to do a blood test before sedating her for x-rays. She also should get some shots, and other basic treatments. If there is a bigger injury, we will deal with that later, for now this fundraiser is to get her bandaged up, on antibiotics, x-rayed and a general check up.
All donations are paid only to the veterinarian. As this is an urgent case, Art has no car, and Sheba has no vet history we do not have a specific vet yet, but will update as we get more information on Monday.
