Wounds filled with maggots,

she’s just a little puppy!

When admitted to the ER:

Animal Control brought her into the emergency vet Thursday night. She was found collapsed, with open wounds. Her right ear was hanging off, about 90% torn from her head.

On examination the wounds had necrotic (dead) tissue and there were maggots in them. This means they were older wounds, days, maybe weeks. There was blue liquid in the wounds too, which is probably “Gentian Violet”, an antiseptic used on farm animals.

What happened? We can only guess, but probably somebody without money to treat her was hoping to sell her, she got attacked by a large dog or a coyote, and they had this antiseptic available (or stole it) and poured it on her, hoping it would help. Maybe this person lives on or near a farm or commercial livestock company.

The wounds require expensive care. They have to be cleaned, dead tissue cut out piece by piece, and then drains put in, and sown up. The Animal Control budget is about $100 per case, so she was set to be put to sleep (see vet notes below). We stepped in and took over. Named her Stitch, almost her entire right ear had to be sewn back on.

Friday Jim Ralston drove her from the ER to Camino Pet Hospital where she will need constant wound care and daily bandage changes. We are only able to save her because we know YOU will support Stitch. Please make a donation to her care now.
