Radiation Therapy to Beat Cancer—Again

Sophia, a sweet and gentle 9-year-old Golden Retriever, has been Franchesca’s best friend since she was just 17. She found Sophia at a pet store in the Burlington Mall—standing on her hind legs, tongue pressed to the glass. It was love at first sight. Franchesca didn’t support buying from pet stores, but in that moment, she felt like she was saving Sophia.

Last January, Sophia was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma (STS) on her abdominal wall. Franchesca spent everything she had—her entire savings for college—on three surgeries to remove it. Now, heartbreakingly, the cancer is back, and Sophia needs radiation therapy to stop it from growing again.

The estimated cost for treatment is $12,000. Franchesca has been able to pull together about half, including what she has left on credit. But she’s maxed out her Care Credit, works just two days a week as a waitress, and lives with her mom and 85-year-old grandmother, helping with groceries and care at home. She’s also in college, preparing to become a diagnostic medical sonographer—and will soon be a full-time student.

She never hesitated to use her college savings to save Sophia. Now she’s asking for help to give her best friend a real shot at more time—more walks, more cuddles, more life.
