About the Campaign

Sam is a 6-year-old male Pointer mix with a tumor on his left front leg that has been getting bigger and now needs veterinary care. Meg recently brought him in to the vet after noticing the growth had enlarged.

Meg adopted Sam from the shelter when he was about 2 or 3 years old. She believes he may have belonged to an older man who became ill around the time of COVID, though she can’t know for sure. She had raised English Pointers in the past, and even though Sam is a mix, she says there was something familiar and special about him right away. In fact, when she met him at the shelter, Sam peed on her foot—and somehow, that sealed it. She paid $80 to bring him home. 😀

The tumor first became noticeable around the time Meg developed POTS about 14 months ago. At the time, she was still teaching and trying to manage a demanding life while her own health was beginning to unravel. She wishes she had caught it sooner, but the reality is that she was overwhelmed and distracted trying to survive. What matters now is that the growth has continued to enlarge, and that finally pushed her to get Sam seen last week.

Sam is being seen by Dr. Tarantino’s clinic outside of Kansas City, Missouri. He referred Meg and Sam to us for help with a fundraiser because he knows her situation is a true financial hardship.

Meg is no longer able to work because of her medical condition and says she is having a very hard time just living day to day. A friend is currently giving her a place to stay and helping with food, and she also receives food stamps. She lives alone, and in her current condition, looking for work is simply not realistic.

Meg was a teacher for 22 years, but she lost her livelihood because of her health. She has even had to sell her car just to survive. She is still trying to do right by Sam, the dog she took in to give a stable, happy life.

Donations will help cover Sam’s veterinary care for the tumor on his leg, including diagnostics and treatment as recommended by his veterinarian. All donations are paid only to the veterinarian. Thank you for helping Meg get Sam the care he needs at a time when she truly has nowhere else to turn. Estimate is below, click to enlarge:
