About the Campaign

Pinky needs help!

Sweet Pink is a four year-old rescue. Her first owner had a drug problem and surrendered her at 10 months when he went into rehab. Fortunately our rescue got her, and she was just the sweetest, happiest dog that we ever had! And then she met Joel, a fabulous guy looking for a best friend. They were a match right from the beginning and she was adopted. Look at these two:

Something unusual happened to Pink last week. She went to the vet to get some vaccine updates and a regular check up. All went fine. But in the next days she started acting tired, looking sick and depressed. A few days after Joel took her back to the vet, they did a blood test, but sent them home to wait for the results. Sure Pink looked a bit tired, but was otherwise fine.

Feeling down at the vet

She wasn’t fine. That evening the doctor called. The blood test results were back. They were bad. Her white blood cell count was gone, way way down. The doctor was afraid she had Sepsis, a overpowering blood infection and told Joel to rush her to the emergency vet. Fortunately Joel lives in Sacramento, and is an amazing pet parent! He got her into UC Davis that evening, arguably the best vet school in the country.

Pink was there for three days, an Joel cried his eyes out, he even got a burst vessel in his eye:

So far? Nothing. They did every test in the book. Bone cancer? No. Bone marrow issue? No. Lymph infection or cancer? No and No. Right now the theory is that Pink had a rare and severe vaccine reaction. It caused her body to turn on itself, her immune system attacking it’s own white blood cells. She is at home with a bunch of medications. She is feeling better. But she still has a ways to go and important follow up care. All those test coming back negative is great, it is great she doesn’t have bone marrow cancer…. but those tests are expensive. Her bills are already in the 1000s, and she will need more. Let’s help get her all the care she needs! We are matching the first $1000 donated, and all donations go right to help Pink! Please give her some love right now, and we promise to keep updating about her journey 🙂
