Persi

About the Campaign

Persi is a 4-year-old female German Shepherd/Australian Kelpie mix who is dealing with serious allergies that are leading to secondary infections, including an ear infection and inflamed, reddened skin. Her veterinarian says Persi needs monthly allergy shots to control the underlying problem and prevent the painful flare-ups and repeat infections from coming right back.

Dina realized something was wrong when she woke up one morning and Persi’s stomach looked intensely red. She got her into the vet quickly, and that visit revealed more than one issue. Persi also had an ear infection that Dina hadn’t noticed yet. Treatment helped, but the vet explained this is likely an ongoing allergy cycle: allergies trigger inflammation, inflammation leads to infection, and without consistent management, it keeps repeating.

Dina adopted Persi recently through the Humane Society. Dina was always more of a “cat person” and had two longtime cats, with her last one recently passing. This time, she decided she was ready for a dog, especially because many family members are allergic to cats, including her son, granddaughter, and mother. Dina had always wanted a Shepherd-type dog, and when she saw Persi online, she went to meet her. In person, Persi was even more beautiful and gentle than the photos, already potty trained, and Dina brought her home. Persi can be reactive and barks at other dogs, but with Dina she’s a sweet, steady companion.

The problem is that this help is needed every month, and Dina’s is on SSDI (disability) and lives on a fixed income. She has Medi-Cal through a working disabled program, but it doesn’t cover these veterinary costs. Dina recently spent about $600 on Persi’s vet visit and medications, which used up her resources—and now she’s fallen behind on rent because she chose Persi’s care first.

Dina is also managing her own health issues, and she’s helping care for her mother. She shared she has a nodule on her neck that needs medical follow-up too. Dina wants to keep Persi healthy and comfortable, but she cannot keep up with repeated vet bills and monthly injections on her income.
