About the Campaign
Mr. Kitty is a 9-year-old male Maine Coon mix with rotten teeth that need to be extracted. His breath can be smelled across the room, and his owner Darcy has noticed one of his eyes fogging up at times, which is also a sign of infection. The vet estimated about $400 for the dental work, but Darcy lives on a fixed income and cannot cover it.
Mr. Kitty’s original owner passed away earlier this year, and for four or five months he lived alone in the house while relatives drove an hour each way to feed him. When they could not keep it up, they posted an ad at the local shelter. Darcy had just lost her own dog, Chloe, to heart disease at 16, and she took him in this spring.
A couple of weeks after he arrived, she noticed the smell and traced it to his mouth. She got him to the vet as soon as she could scrape together the exam fee, about a month ago, and the vet confirmed the teeth are rotting. Infected teeth are painful, make eating harder, and the bacteria can travel to the heart and kidneys.
Darcy says he is a Maine Coon through and through: big, social, and full of personality. He has settled into his new home after a hard year.
Darcy has been on SSDI for five years, since a neck injury she suffered while working as a caregiver for a person with dementia ended her ability to work even part time. She lives in subsidized housing. Her car broke down two years ago and she had to surrender it to the finance company, so she has no vehicle. A $400 vet bill is most of a month’s budget.
This is a small, fixable problem for a cat who has already been through enough. Donations will cover Mr. Kitty’s bloodwork, anesthesia, dental cleaning, extractions, antibiotics, and pain medication. All donations are paid only to the veterinarian. Estimate is below, click to enlarge:
