About the Campaign
Mocha is a 4-year-old female Poodle who was hit by a car during a leashed walk and suffered two broken bones in her leg. She has already had her orthopedic surgery—surgeons placed plates and screws to repair the fractures, but now she urgently needs help with the aftercare that will determine whether her leg heals correctly.
Ebony, Mocha’s owner, was walking her at night at a four-way stop when a driver blew through and struck Mocha. The car didn’t stop. Ebony was terrified! Mocha was curled up and screaming in pain, and Ebony feared her leg would have to be amputated. She couldn’t get the license plate in the moment because she was focused entirely on getting Mocha help. The accident happened around 8 p.m., and Ebony plans to file a police report, but right then all she could do was rush Mocha to urgent care.
Before surgery, Ebony spent what she could just to keep Mocha stable: about $1,000 at urgent care, plus repeated costs for re-splinting (about $200 twice) and pain medications. Ebony says she is already in debt from those emergency bills. The surgery itself was a major cost (estimated around $5,000–$6,000), but Ebony shared that the hospital found funding to cover the surgery portion—however, the aftercare was not covered, and that’s where she is stuck now.
Mocha has been part of Ebony’s family since she was a puppy. She was a gift—Ebony wanted a dog at the time, and her daughter’s grandmother surprised her with Mocha before she passed away. Ebony brought Mocha home at about 8 weeks old, and for four years she’s been a constant in their small household—Ebony, her 15-year-old daughter Taylor, and Mocha.
Mocha before the hit-and-run:
Financially, Ebony is doing everything she can, but she doesn’t have room for unexpected medical costs. She is a single mother working through a temp agency, taking substitute assignments with special education students when work is available. That assignment is about to end, and she expects to be without work over the summer. She also relies on Section 8 housing assistance to stay afloat. Even with determination and hard work, she simply cannot cover Mocha’s follow-up care on her own.
This fundraiser is for Mocha’s post-op needs—the rechecks, bandage/splint management (if needed), medications, follow-up imaging, and any rehabilitation guidance required—so the plates and screws can do their job and Mocha can heal without complications.
Donations will help cover Mocha’s orthopedic aftercare and follow-up veterinary visits so her leg can heal properly. All donations are paid only to the veterinarian. Estimates are below, click to enlarge:
