About the Campaign

Lucy is a 4-year-old female blue American Pit Bull Terrier with a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in her knee. Her vet has recommended a TPLO, a surgery that cuts and repositions the top of the shin bone so the knee stays stable without the ligament. It is the standard repair for a dog her size and build, with an excellent prognosis.

Her owner Joshua noticed she had started sitting cockeyed, with the leg kicked out to the side instead of tucked under her. After a week of watching it, he called the vet. The exam found the tear and showed she was already losing muscle mass in the leg from not using it properly. The vet’s view is that it will only get worse. A torn CCL does not heal on its own, and an unstable knee wears down the joint and pushes the dog to overload the other leg until that one tears too.

Joshua is an electrician, but during the pandemic he delivered pizza, and one of his regular customers had a litter of puppies. He had been telling his girlfriend how much he liked blue pits. The customer brought out three of the five puppies for him to look at, and he fell for Lucy immediately. She was malnourished when he got her, and he spent the first two weeks getting weight back on her. She has been his dog for four years.

Joshua has not been able to work for more than a year because of serious health problems he is still seeing multiple doctors about. He lives alone, keeps his overhead as low as it can go, and is on income-based programs for gas and electric. He gets $289 a month in SNAP and has applied for Medicaid. To get by, he has drained his savings, sold the scrap copper he had been setting aside from his electrical work, sold his guitar, and is trying to sell a four-wheeler that does not run. There is nothing left to sell that would cover Lucy’s TPLO.

Lucy is young, and TPLO has an excellent track record! Donations will cover her surgical consultation, x-rays, bloodwork, anesthesia, the TPLO, pain medication, and follow-up visits so she can sit, walk, and run the way she should. All donations are paid only to the veterinarian. The estimate from Patton Veterinary for $7468 is below (click to enlarge), however Joshua has since found another vet that has given him a verbal quote of $4075 and the fundraiser is based on that and what Joshua is able to contribute.

My dog tore her CCL about 2 months ago and I tried the strict rest approach which worked well and she was healing then she chased a cat when on the leash and now it's a compete tear with a torn meniscus so surgery is the best option.

My 5 year old118 lb boy tore his knee. After surgery for another large dog and seeing what she went through, I decided against surgery. I kept him quiet and walked him on a leash slowly around my back garden at least twice a day and he rested and stayed in the house; bathroom calls were on leash too. It was very successful and he continued on to enjoy his life limp free and his other knee didn't give out either. Basically it's the same recuperation as needed after surgery without the surgery. It takes time and dedication to build up those muscles and if you find a good supplement, use that too.

Bob the Magnificent is 2 YO. he had this surgery 6 weeks ago and his healing is ahead of schedule! i spent the last of my savings for him and i would do it again (if i had the savings again)...if i didn't have the funds, i wouldn't be shy about doing a "go fund me" or something like that.

hope lucy's as fortunate as my bob and that the surgery is a success!

That doesn't sound free if he had to sell his truck and tools. They told us the same about our Pittie. She's running around and jumping just fine. No surgery. We're still paying off her last surgery. 😑

TPLO is not the only option!!! Extracapsular CCL (such as tightrope) repair is less invasive, reversible, and less expensive.

This surgery is unnecessary and causes much suffering and is expensive. Ive healed it several times with a simple inexpensive food additive granule called NZymes. It takes a number of weeks but reversal is gradual so you start to see improvement fairly quickly.

A year ago, I lost my 14.5 year old dog who looked just like Lucy. Donating in memory of her and of course to give Lucy’s leg a fighting chance. Love and prayers for her full healing and speedy recovery.

Please make clearer that donations go directly to the veterinarian, and the people you are helping will receive more donations, put it in boulder print that is obvious without people having to click on something because people often don’t take the time to read a page through (I didn’t see this in first).

He’s taking her to a different vet so I’d like the vet info so I can donate. With all the risks of being scammed out there most dogs don’t get the help they desperately need in situations like this bc ppl are worried the money won’t go where it should. Please send me the vet info and your acct info with her name God bless you both. You obviously love and care for her to make so many sacrifices. But you’re not taking the easy way out and surrendering her to a shelter. You are fighting to give her what she needs to be healthy and pain free and I hope life brings you both many more healthy and happy years.
