About the Campaign
You can help keep these poor dogs (and cats!) comfortable during heat emergencies and excessive heat warnings. The San Bernardino City Animal Shelter does NOT have air conditioning, and the kennels are outdoors. Temperatures during extreme times can exceed 115F (45C) in the shade.
$4.00 buys one extra large block of ice. $10.00 buys one bag of three medium blocks. We will also be buying bags of ice cubes to keep the water bowls cold. The ice company is donating delivery and a refrigerated trailer to store the ice. Big thank you to Bear Ice in San Bernardino!
All the dogs are in outdoor kennels. There is a sprinkler/misting system installed that sprays a mist of cool water over the kennels. This helps lower the ambient temperature in the kennels to tolerable, if still uncomfortable, levels.
The cat room has a swamp cooler (evaporative cooling) but no AC. So cool water, and ice help with supplemental cooling in the cat room as well.
Money from this fund also help us with other items that keep the dogs cool, such as bowls for the ice, fans, etc…
What this fund will be used for:
The money raised here will be used to help shelters in the southern California area keep dogs cool. This will be for ice during heat emergencies, but also for more permanent solutions. Any public shelter that could use help should contact us!
Unfortunately San Bernardino shelter, and some other desert area shelters, also suffer from extreme cold in exposed outdoor kennels during the winter. Deserts are hot in the summer, but very cold in the winter, especially at night. If we raise enough money we will also use it to help with these conditions!
