About the Campaign

Jurnee is a 6 year old, lovable and fun loving Rotty. Bred from Carter’s Noble Gold Shaka Zulu, Best In Show winner in 2006, Jurnee is a great companion. Jurnee belongs to a miss Hazel Sanders. Hazel and Jurnee came together when Jurnee was just a bouncy, playful, little puppy snatching breeder ribbons off of all the other dogs necks. She was so sweet and loving Hazel just had to take her home. Since then, Hazel and Jurnee have been inseparable, not even the courts could tear these two apart.

“It’s been a journey” Hazel says. “I was in federal court with her. Jurnee and I have been through a journey. I named her right! I didn’t know it at the time but it worked out that way”.

In 2012, Jurnee and Hazel went to court to battle a housing injustice being pushed upon her by the facility she lived in. Hazel relies on Jurnee for many things other than companionship. Jurnee is the original service dog. Hazel needs Jurnee to get around, walk, and hold her up if she falls. “It’s not a pet; she’s my legs,” Hazel told Arthur Hirsch, The Baltimore Sun in the Howard County Times  news article. Hazel was being forced to vacate her home on the grounds that her service animal, a Rottweiler could not be reasonably accommodated within the building. Lawyers tried to present evidence of the Rottweiler breed being dangerous and comparable to Pitbulls ( a controversial breed in society). Heart broken and confused Hazel knew that something needed to be done. She fought with everything that she had to keep her home and Jurnee all in one place. Well, in the end, Hazel was able to move back into her home and keep Jurnee by her side. You can read about the resolution in the Howard County Times follow up article.

So, after all the fighting to keep Jurnee by her side, you can imagine how hard she’s fighting to keep her happy, healthy and comfortable. Hazel and Jurnee are both fighters! We’re asking you to join that fight and help Jurnee get the surgery she needs! As a disabled, senior, Hazel cannot afford this surgery alone. The cost of her housing is a third of her assistance check. However, just because things are rough doesn’t mean Hazel will give up on Jurnee.

The lump on Jurnee’s right side has been monitored for quite sometime. However, just recently has it begun to grow in size and disrupt Jurnee’s day to day activity. The vet says before it gets any bigger. it must be removed! Jurnee is depending on us, and Hazel is depending on Jurnee. A little, helps a whole lot and we implore you to assist with helping this unstoppable duo!

I met Jurnee 2 years ago while delivering mail to her home. She was so cute and friendly I just fell in love with her. I pray that Jurnee will get her surgery and recover so she can continue bringing joy and love to her human mommy Miss Hazel’s heart.
