About the Campaign

Spleen could burst, which would be fatal!

Gus is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who needs a splenectomy — surgery to remove his spleen. His family was terrified they were about to lose him just a week ago. Right now, Gus isn’t bleeding, but his veterinarian has made it clear that surgery is needed to keep him safe and give him the best chance at recovery.

Carrie brought Gus to the vet after a scary episode that made her think he might be dying. X-rays were done, and while Gus had an infection last week, the vet doesn’t believe the infection caused the spleen problem. The bigger concern is what could happen if the spleen starts bleeding or ruptures without warning.

Gus has been with Carrie since he was a puppy in 2013 — their first “baby” before marriage and kids. Carrie still remembers choosing him because of his heart-shaped nose. Today, Gus is part of the daily rhythm of the household, especially for Benjamin, 6, who is deeply attached to him. Carrie and Scott have two young boys — Benjamin and Ethan, 3 — and the thought of losing Gus has been awful.

Carrie and her husband, Scott, both work for Home Depot. They’re currently in a debt relief program and living paycheck to paycheck. Some of the existing debt is from Gus’ prior surgeries. And their son Benjamin broke his arm in August and needed rods placed, adding even more financial pressure. Carrie has also applied for CareCredit, but she does not qualify. They’re doing everything they can — and they still can’t absorb another major emergency surgery on their own.

Gus’ surgery is the difference between living with a constant, frightening “what if,” and giving him a real chance to heal and get back to the life he loves — surrounded by the people who have loved him for 12 years. All donations are paid only to the veterinarian. Estimate is below, click to enlarge:

I lost a wonderful corgi to hemangiosarcoma. Unfortunately, it had already spread to her heart and was inoperable. I hope this helps save Gus and that he is back home as good as new very soon.
