About the Campaign
Athena is an 11 year old beagle mix that has served as the Service and Support dog to 27 yr old man who sustained a brain injury as an 8 year child. He has permanent brain damage and is disabled.
Athena was seen by veterinarian on 10/24/19 for a large bleeding mass on her lower mandible/lip but after a thorough exam, other serious issues were uncovered requiring urgent attention:
- Heart murmur grade 4 out of 6
Requires: Echocardiogram to determine heart medication needed
- 2 visible mammary tumors:
Requires: X-rays to check for lung metastases. If no metastases in lungs then surgery aims at complete tumor removal with clean histological margins by using the simplest technique. Unilateral mastectomy is currently recommended for the prevention of second tumor development associated with a regional mastectomy.
- Bleeding mass on lower mandible, possible carcinoma
Requires: Tru Cut biopsy, sent to a pathologist to determine if and what type of cancer.
If malignant then would require complete surgical excision of the tumor, surrounding tissue, and any affected bone is required in an effort to obtain clean margins and effective local control.
- Labs indicate infection and this is most likely to major periodontal disease
Requires: Full dental prophylaxis with extractions.
Her family has fallen on hard times and cannot afford treatment. We have arranged for treatment at a reputable, high quality vet in Mexico at significant savings! Your donation will really go a long way!
All transportation to and from Mexico is being covered by Jenny Armour-Ascione of Open Arms Rescue in San Diego.
