About the Campaign
Angus is a 3-year-old male Cane Corso, a big boy at over 110 pounds, who needs surgery for cherry eye, possible entropion, and neuter. His owner, Dawn, rescued him with serious health problems, including heartworms, and has already spent about $600 to $800 getting him through heartworm treatment. Now that he has finally been cleared for surgery, she needs help with the next step.
Angus was most likely a breeder dump. Dawn lives in the mountains, where backyard breeding is common, and Angus appeared to be a beautiful, well-bred dog with one obvious problem: his eye. A woman posted online that Angus had wandered onto her property. She tried to find his owner, but no one claimed him, and she could not afford to keep feeding a dog his size. He was getting skinny and needed someone to take him in.
Dawn saw the post through a local lost-and-found animal group and stepped up. She had originally joined that group after her own dog once got lost, and ever since then, local lost animals show up in her feed. When she saw Angus, she knew he needed help. She took him in when he was about 1 to 2 years old, and his cherry eye was obvious from the start.
When Dawn brought Angus to the vet to plan surgery, they found his heartworm disease was serious enough that he could not safely move forward right away. Instead of a quicker treatment plan, Angus needed about a year to get through heartworm care. Now he has finally been cleared, and the vet can address his eyes and neuter.
This matters for more than one reason. Angus has cherry eye and signs of entropion, where the eyelid rolls inward and irritates the eye. He also needs to be neutered. Dawn says people have approached her wanting to breed him because he is such a striking dog, but she has refused. Angus was likely discarded by a backyard breeder because of his eye problems, and Dawn does not want more puppies born into the same situation.
The challenge is cost. Everything for Angus costs more because he is over 110 pounds. He is too big for the local “snip bus,” and Dawn does not feel comfortable taking him to a low-cost clinic an hour away because of his size, his heartworm history, and his short-muzzled build. She feels safest having surgery done at the vet office near home, where they have cared for him since two days after she rescued him.
Dawn is a 3rd grade teacher on a single income. She can cover regular bills and basic vet care, but surgery for a dog Angus’s size is more than she can manage. Her air conditioning recently went out, her car needs brakes, and she is also repairing a gate because Angus is strong enough to break through the old one. She cares for several animals, including a 14-year-old Lab on medications, but financially she can no longer foster the way she used to.
Angus was dumped once because he needed help. Dawn made sure that would not happen to him again. Donations will help cover Angus’s cherry eye repair, entropion treatment if needed, neuter, anesthesia, medications, and related veterinary care. All donations are paid only to the veterinarian.
