About the Campaign

She’s a Refugee!

Really, Alexa was smuggled out of Russia to the Illinois in the USA. Her owners came first, fleeing political persecution in Russia where they were threatened with prison for their political positions. Elena and her husband got into the US and received asylum in 2022. Then they sent for their dog Alexa.

Alexa traveled by train to Moscow, and then secretly in a bus to Poland. There she spent a few weeks with foster family until travel to New York was arranged, and then on to Illinois where she was reunited with Elena!

A new world for Alexa:

Elena has had Alexa since Alexa was a puppy, she is 14 years old now. Alexa has had a number of health problems in the past, including some tumors that were removed in 2018 and dental work in 2021 (all done in Russia).

Recently Alexa has stopped eating dry food. Elena prepares special wet food for her, but even then she has lost about 20% of her weight. They took her to a vet at the end of May, and the doctor says she needs more teeth removed, and has an infection. The doctor also thinks there is a possible tumor or growth in the mouth, but this is not sure. It won’t show up in an x-ray, so the doctor will wait until Alexa is under anesthesia to look for it, and remove and biopsy if there.

Alexa’s owners had to pay nearly $3000 to get her out of Russia last year, and though they have work permission their income in low, and they have a lot of legal expenses as well. They were able to pay for her initial exam, but do not have the money nor the credit to cover surgery costs. All donations are paid ONLY to the veterinarian, when Alexa gets treatment. Please see the estimate below, and know it will be on the high end (we have consulted with the owners and the vet regarding the procedure):

This sweet baby has been through a lot . Being separated from her family must have been so scary for her. I’m donating what I can because she deserves to have a comfortable pain free life. Good luck Alexa .
